Planning a trip to Seoul? Getting around the city's extensive public transportation system efficiently is key to a great experience. The Climate Card could be your perfect solution, offering unlimited access to buses, subways, and even the Ttareungi bike-sharing service. But is it the best choice for tourists? We'll take a look at the benefits, costs, and extra perks of the Climate Card to help you decide.
What is the Climate Card?
Introduced in 2024, the Climate Card is a transportation pass designed to give both locals and tourists unlimited use of Seoul's public transit for a set period. Once loaded, you can enjoy up to 30 days of unlimited rides on subways, buses, and the Seoul Ttareungi bike-sharing system. It's an excellent option for residents or anyone looking to explore Seoul extensively during their stay.

What does the Climate Card cover?
The Climate Card gives you access to:
All Seoul-based subway lines, including the Gimpo Goldline
Seoul-licensed transit and town buses (you can even board or get off outside Seoul, as long as it's a Seoul-licensed bus)
Ttareungi (Seoul Bike) - unlimited use of the city's popular bike-sharing system
Keep in mind some limitations:
It doesn't cover the Sinbundang Line, subway lines outside Seoul, intercity and airport buses, or non-Seoul-licensed buses
If you exit at a subway station beyond the service area, you'll need to pay extra. For example, boarding at Jongno 3-ga Station (in Seoul) and getting off at Indeogwon Station (outside Seoul) will incur an additional fare
How much does regular public transport cost in Seoul?
To see if the Climate Card is a good deal, let's look at standard fares:
Subway:
Adults: 1,400 KRW for the first 10km (100 KRW extra per 5km after that)
Youth: 800 KRW
Children: 500 KRW
Bus (varies by type):
Adults: 1,200 to 1,500 KRW
Youth: 600 to 900 KRW
Children: 400 to 550 KRW
Transfers between different buses or subway lines are usually free or discounted if done within 30 minutes, but this doesn't apply to transfers on the same line.
What are the Climate Card options and prices?
The Climate Card offers several choices to fit different needs:
Long-term Pass:
30-day Pass (with Ttareungi): 65,000 KRW (Youth Discount: 58,000 KRW)
30-day Pass (without Ttareungi): 62,000 KRW (Youth Discount: 55,000 KRW)
Short-term Tourist Pass:
Perfect for visitors, these passes offer unlimited Seoul public transit use for a set period at budget-friendly prices:
2-day Pass: 8,000 KRW
3-day Pass: 10,000 KRW
5-day Pass: 15,000 KRW
7-day Pass: 20,000 KRW
Remember, short-term passes activate as soon as you charge them, so plan carefully to maximize value. While they don't include Ttareungi access, they do come with some extra perks.

What if I need a refund?
If your plans change, you can get a refund on your Climate Card.
Here's how it's calculated:
Refund Amount = Total Charged - Amount Used on Public Transit - 500 KRW Fee
Make sure to request your refund before the card's use period ends. Refunds can go directly to a Korean bank account or be partially canceled on your payment card. For tourists without a Korean bank account, cash refunds are available at the Tmoney headquarters.
So, is the Climate Card worth it for tourists?
For most tourists planning to explore Seoul extensively over several days, the Climate Card offers excellent value. The convenience of unlimited public transit, combined with discounts on popular attractions, makes it a cost-effective choice.
However, if you're planning to visit areas outside Seoul or need transportation not covered by the card, factor in those additional costs. Overall, for visitors focusing on Seoul, the Climate Card is a smart and economical option.
Whether you're zipping around on the subway, hopping on buses, or enjoying discounted entry to Seoul's attractions, the Climate Card can enhance your travel experience while helping you save money.
Happy travels in Seoul!
